When in doubt, travel….exploring Reykjavik

Aaaahhhh so it’s our Day Four, it’s our final day in Iceland. This may sound strange but we set aside this day as our “stay around the area” day. There’s so much to see and do in Iceland, but for now, we’ve crossed off a few hefty things off of our bucket list.

What’s the plan? Explore, eat, walk, relax, walk, walk, walk. First stop, breakfast away from the city center, and we took a 20 minute walk towards the water, and ate at Kaffivagninn. I’ve been craving fish, and I had to have their salmon wrapped in what looked like a pancake with sauce, eggs, and cucumber (I think). It was perfection. Ana and Stephen ordered their strawberry crepe with skyr…..hmmmm!!! They also ordered omelet- it was deliciously prepared!

Most of the morning was spent walking close to the water. We stopped at the Kalaporti Flea Market, an indoor market. Unlike many of the markets I’ve tried in the US, and markets in Paris, Prague, Spain, Budapest – the difference with the Kalaporti market was the abundance of seafood goodies. It was like walking in to a very small Costco, and we got to sample different types of dried or smoked fish. That was a different experience.

From there, we walked past Harpa and the Voyager for a few photo ops.

Not long after, we found ourselves at Braud & Co, a bakery on Frakkastígur. We passed by here the other day, and we vowed to return. So glad we did. The aroma inside was insane filled with baking goodness. The most memorable one was their cinnamon roll, very different from the American type, no glaze, but the flavor was all within every single bite. I hope to come back to this place again.

We also stopped by Reykjavik Coffee Roasters for a cappuccino and tuna sandwich. I kinda wanted the bread to be toasted or a little crunchy, nevertheless, the tuna made up for it. It was delicious.

 

And we kept walking, and just walked around the area.

For dinner, we ended up at Rok, also on Frakkastígur. This was unforgettable. We ordered seven different choices of Icelandic fare…from langoustine, to fried cod, to reindeer……amazing tapas portions, outstanding.

For dessert, we stopped at Eldur for Skyr and Mixed Berry crepe. It was a bit tart for my taste….but I wanted to have the skyr again, so it was okay.
Since we have a scheduled early morning shuttle ride to the airport, we went back to the apartment to pack.

 

 

By 8:30pm, we all went out again. Nancy and I went to Ramen Momo, the only ramen restaurant in Iceland (so I’ve been told). I ordered their Tonkotsu Pork Ramen and ordered it spicy. I’m used to very flavorful broth, but this one was just okay, it’s passable, but definitely not the best ramen I’ve had. It’s a good thing the guy who served it was very hospitable.

It was already getting late, and on our way home, the hot dog stand that we went to the other night called out my name. Of course, I answered. One last Icelandic hot dog to end our 4 days in Iceland. Tomorrow, we go to another country….so stay tuned.
